Cedric Gibbons was an American art director who oversaw Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's art department from 1924 to 1956. Credited as the designer of the Oscar statuette, he was nominated thirty-nine times and received eleven statuettes including best art direction for THE MERRY WIDOW (1934), GASLIGHT (1944), and AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (1951). Colleen Moore (1900-1988) was born Kathleen Morrison in Port Huron, Michigan. Her film acting career began in 1917. Throughout the 1920s she often portrayed independent women (usually flappers) on screen. From 1915 through the mid-1920s she was arguably the most popular and best-known woman in the world, known affectionately as "America’s Sweetheart." In 1919, with Douglas Fairbanks, Charles Chaplin, and D. W. Griffith as her partners, she launched United Artists. Pickford was a founder and life member of the Academy.
