Kevin Brownlow conducted his interviews under a variety of circumstances. While most were pre-arranged and somewhat formal, usually taking place in the subjects' homes, others were obtained more casually -- sometimes in public settings, which occasionally had a deleterious impact on the quality of the recordings. Many of the interviews do not include formal introductions or closings, and individuals are not usually identified within the recordings themselves.

In order to maximize usage of tape stock, Brownlow often recorded a single interview session over a series of tapes, sometimes using the available remaining tape from other interviews. On the tape label, he included sequence numbers to indicate the portion of the session recorded on that tape. These sequence numbers are included in the Title field within quotes. Other recordings that may contain portions of the interview session are listed in the Related Titles field.
