Costume Designer Janty Yates discusses Russell Crowes' armor for THE GLADIATOR. Yates discusses the breastplate worn by the main character, “Maximus,” given to him by his mentor and worn in the gladiator ring during battle. As Maximus gains success in competition, he adds special figurines to the breastplate. Yates and her team designed and made the figurines look like they were fashioned out of silver. Additionally, Yates describes the challenge of creating wearable, comfortable armor for Maximus which was eventually made from foam rubber to be light and comfortable. Yates trusts that her costumes lent strength to the characters and to the film overall.
