Public summaryCostume design partners Kurt and Bart discuss their creative process for the costumes in DALLAS BUYERS CLUB. Kurt observes that for the actors, costuming is, after the script, their first real contact with character creation. For the film, the designers purposely avoided the typical “big hair, shoulder-pad” screen look of the 1980s, instead recalling the era as having significant “left-over” styles of the 1970s tinged with rural Americana workwear clothing which informed their choices. The men visited thrift stores from New Orleans to Houston to gather authentic attire, not created “costumes.” The Academy Museum selected three of the outfits for their exhibition on costumes and the designers express appreciation that the clothes would be properly preserved.
