Biography
Founded in 1927 by 36 of the most influential men and women in the motion picture industry at the time, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is an honorary membership organization whose ranks now include more than 6,000 artists and professionals working in cinema. It presents the Academy Awards, golden statuettes awarded annually for notable achievement in motion pictures. Although best known for its annual Oscar telecast, the Academy is also involved in a wide array of education, outreach, preservation and research activities.
