- BiographyCedric Gibbons was an American art director who oversaw Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's art department from 1924 to 1956. Credited as the designer of the Oscar statuette, he was nominated thirty-nine times and received eleven statuettes including best art direction for THE MERRY WIDOW (1934), GASLIGHT (1944), and AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (1951). Gibbons was married to actress Dolores Del Rio from 1930 to 1941 and to actress Hazel Brooks from 1944 until his death in 1960.
