Bhanu Athaiya

Costume designer

Bhanu Athaiya was an Indian costume designer. Her Academy Award for costume design for Richard Attenborough's GANDHI (1982) made her the first Indian and the only Indian woman to earn an Oscar. In 2012 she returned her Oscar statuette to the Academy and donated archival material related to GANDHI.
