DescriptionThis short documentary, produced by members of the film industry and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, explains the work of soundmen on a film production. The arrival of sound in the late 1920s revolutionized the movie going experience. While silent films always featured a musical accompaniment, hearing actors speak lines and other ambient sounds made films feel more realistic. In the early days of sound films however, fixed microphones restricted actors and severely curtailed movement onscreen. This forced the development of moving and portable equipment as well as a range of sensitive microphones. On the set of the 1950 film, THE GOOD HUMOR MAN, a sound technician, known as the boom man, handles the equipment which dangles a moveable microphone on the end of a long pole, above the actors. An onset sound technician adjusts the captured sound waves for clarity and volume then forwards the sound mix to a recording room where the modified sound waves are captured on film. That negative is developed in a laboratory just like the image negative. The sound and image tracks are later synchronized and printed together on a single filmstrip. In addition to onset sounds, stock libraries provide a myriad of sounds, such as crowds cheering, cars honking, horse hooves galloping, to be used in creating believable blended soundtracks for a finished film.
