This short documentary, produced by members of the film industry and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, discusses how movie theaters across the country are so important to their communities. Serving as a kind of “library,” the movies shown in theaters teach history, are a marketplace to see the wares of the world, a style center that influences, a travel agent depicting destinations far and wide, a sports arena displaying all manner of competition and a concert hall bringing music from near and far. The theater is itself a business, not only employing locals, but patronizing banks and newspapers while stimulating commerce simultaneously. In addition, the theater is a member of the community that offers itself as a unique meeting place for community members to share in a particular entertainment experience. This experience is overseen by the theater exhibitor who sees to it that the projection and sound equipment are properly maintained and that the movie-going experience for the customer remains pleasant and comfortable. The exhibitor is also involved with the community in listening to what audiences enjoy and want to see. Movies remain the greatest entertainment value for the dollar and are an American institution.
