DescriptionThis short documentary, produced by members of the film industry and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, explains the work of the screenwriter. The basis of everything behind a film is the script, the story. The writer’s creation is the least dramatic of most of the artists and technicians that contribute to a movie. Writing is usually solitary and internal. Books, plays and short stories often serve as basis for an adaptation, coordinated by the story editor, to a reader to a producer and then to a writer to develop into a script. Original scripts are also in demand and based on the writer's own imagination, however many outside influences. The writer for movies must always be conscious not only of making the plot move along, but to also emphasize the visual, the main method of conveying meaning in motion pictures. Several writers in Hollywood have gone on to become producers, including Darry Zanuck, Dore Schary and Charles Brackett.
