The Wallace Worsley Jr. papers span the years 1969-1990 and encompass 1.7 linear feet. The collection consists of scripts, production reports, and budget information. The production files contain scripts for FRIED GREEN TOMATOES (1991), I WANNA HOLD YOUR HAND (1978), ‘NIGHT, MOTHER (1986), THE PRISONER OF ZENDA (1979), and VIVA MAX! (1969). Worsley's work for director John Badham on three films is represented by scripts and production reports for AMERICAN FLYERS (1985), THE BINGO LONG TRAVELING ALL-STARS & MOTOR KINGS (1976), and WHOSE LIFE IS IT ANYWAY? (1981). Films with extensive budget information include EARTHQUAKE (1974) and DELIVERANCE (1972). The files in the television series contain budget information for three episodes of the series MADIGAN. There is an honorary citizen certificate Worsley received from the city of Macon, Georgia. - BiographyWallace Worsley Jr., the son of silent film director Wallace Worsley Sr. and stage actress Julia Marie Taylor, was born in 1908 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He began his film career in 1934 as a messenger at MGM, eventually becoming a script clerk by 1936, and it was in this capacity that he worked on THE WIZARD OF OZ in 1939. By the 1940s Worsley was a full-time assistant director. During this period he worked on eight Arthur Freed musicals, including MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS (1944) and EASTER PARADE (1948), and films such as THE PIRATE (1948) and THE BARKLEY'S OF BROADWAY (1949).
During the 1950s Worsley worked in Europe directing television and producing documentaries, educational films, and industrial films. Returning to Hollywood in 1961, he joined Universal studios as a production manager. From the 1960s through the 1980s he alternated between unit production manager, production supervisor, and production manager. He served as production supervisor on DELIVERANCE (1972), EARTHQUAKE (1974), COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER (1980), and E.T. THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL (1982). NIGHT, MOTHER (1986) was his last theatrical film credit. - Wallace Worsley was an American director active in film from 1918 to 1928. He came to Hollywood from Broadway in 1916 and worked as an actor for two years before embarking on a career in directing. Worsley was married to stage actress Julia Marie Taylor.
