Special Collections
The collection documents the restoration work undertaken on the Paper Print Collection under the auspices of the Academy in cooperation with the Library of Congress. Paper prints are contact prints of motion pictures made on light-sensitive paper that were sent by film producers to the U.S. Copyright Office at the Library of Congress before motion pictures were protected by copyright law in 1912. The Academy funded a project from 1953 until at least 1956 in association with the Library of Congress to transfer some of the paper prints onto film stock. The work was undertaken by Kemp R. Niver and his Renovare Film Co. in Los Angeles. Niver received a 1954 Honorary Award from the Academy for the development of the Renovare Process which made possible the transfer to 16mm film of the Library of Congress paper film collection. The Paper Print Collection at the Library of Congress Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division contains more than 3,000 motion pictures. - Subjects
