Screenwriters include Joe Gores, Dennis O'Flaherty, Thomas Pope, and Ross Thomas. There are also memos from director Wim Wenders.
HAMMETT, based on the book by Joe Gores, was the first American film by German New Wave director Wim Wenders. The fictional story places detective fiction writer Dashiell Hammett (played by Frederic Forrest) in San Francisco's Chinatown in the late 1920s, where he investigates the disappearance of a Chinese cabaret actress. The Zoetrope Studios production had a long history rife with speculation regarding rumored problems with finances, reshoots, and re-edits. Francis Ford Coppola executive produced.
