The Silent Film Synopses collection spans the years 1928-1930 and encompasses 0.4 linear foot. The collection consists of four bound volumes created and maintained by an unidentified organist in San Diego, California. These volumes contain detailed synopses of 120 films (20 shorts, 96 features, and four chapters of two serials), averaging six to eight pages for the features and two or three pages for the shorts and serial chapters. This material was originally part of a much larger number of volumes, which are unfortunately lost. Volume 1 covers the period from May 2, 1928, through June 3, 1928; volume 2 from August 1, 1928, through September 16, 1928; volume 3 from September 20, 1928, through December 8, 1928; and volume 4 from December 9, 1928, through January 2, 1929, plus January 5, 1930. Each of the volumes includes an index. The titles have been verified against contemporary sources and "The American Film Institute Catalog" for feature films from the 1920s. The "AFI Catalog" has been used for title authority, but in cases where there was a discrepancy, the variance is noted in brackets. Of special interest are the synopses of several features for which there is no information in the "AFI Catalog," such as "Better Days" and "Moon of Israel." It should also be noted that the films listed do not date just from 1927-1928. Several of the theaters the organist worked at revived films, so there is information on "Nomads of the North" (1920), "The Toll Gate" (1920), "Shame" (1921), "Quicker'n Lightnin'" (1925), and others. - Subjects
