Special Collections
The Burton F. Lamfrom set plans span collection consists of 181 pencil drawings, set plans, and elevations for JOAN OF ARC (1948). Among the drawings are those of Catherine Le Royer's house; the ballroom (Grand Salle) and the chapel at Chinon; de Baudricourt's castle; Jacques D'Arc's house, the church, and the village at Domremy; Luxembourg Palace; Rheims Cathedral; the cathedral, Joan's cell, and the torture room at Rouen; and the castle garden at St. Denis. Of particular interest are the sketches of the Rouen Cathedral and Chinon chapel. The highly detailed sketches were executed by Lamfrom (some are initialed "B.F.L.") as assistant to art director Richard Day. The film received an Academy Award nomination for art direction (color). - BiographyBurton F. Lamfrom (1908-2000) worked for architect Wallace Neff after graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology during the Depression. He entered the film industry in the late 1930s as a sketch artist and set designer. Through a family connection to Fox publicist Harry Brand, he landed a job as a sketch artist at Fox around 1937. Lamfrom was assistant art director on JOAN OF ARC (1948).
