Special Collections
The Edna Murphy papers span the years 1919-1935 and encompass 2.5 linear feet. The collection consists primarily of personal items, such as handwritten verse and prose, correspondence, diaries, material relating to Murphy's European travels, and address books. Murphy's professional life is documented by several film company contracts, some correspondence, handwritten credit lists, and various items relating to the Los Angeles Beaux Arts Playshop, where the actress made her stage debut in 1928. There is some correspondence between Murphy and Mervyn LeRoy. - BiographyEdna Murphy (1899-1974) was born in New York City and educated at Manual Arts High School in Brooklyn. She began her career as a model in New York and segued into acting with a prominent role in TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER (1918). Murphy left for Hollywood after filming OVER THE HILL TO THE POORHOUSE (1920) in Fort Lee, New Jersey. Between 1920 and 1932 she appeared in more than 60 feature-length productions. Murphy married director Mervyn LeRoy in 1927.
