The collection comprises photocopies of three undated autobiographical manuscripts by Robert McElwaine with boyhood memories of growing up in Hollywood where his father worked as a studio publicist and with anecdotes of his own career as a publicist and press agent.
- BiographyRobert Marshall McElwaine (1923-2010) was born in New York, the son of Donald and Ina Estelle (Fowler) McElwaine. His father, known as both Don and Donn, was a publicist at Fox and MGM from 1942, his brother Donald McElwaine Jr. was a casting director, and his brother Guy Franklin McElwaine was an agent, producer, and studio head. Robert began his career working as a messenger boy and mailroom clerk at MGM. He handled publicity for the Tarzan films and became a press agent. In 1947, with R. Paul Hoffman he formed McElwaine & Hoffman, an independent publicity and advertising agency, where his clients included Samuel Goldwyn, Danny Kaye, and others. After marrying, in 1959 he left Hollywood to become a publicist for the auto industry, president of the American International Automobile Dealers Association, and eventually a lobbyist in Washington, D.C. In 2008, with Bob Bain he wrote music for “Danny and Sylvia: The Danny Kaye Musical.”
