The collection consists primarily of personal documents and possessions of Jean Renoir and his wife Dido, including address books, financial documents, magazines and other publications, disc recordings, and various paper ephemera. The collection includes a small amount of correspondence, primarily letters to Dido Renoir from her family and friends.
- BiographyJean Renoir was a French writer, director, producer, and actor active in film from 1925 to 1973. Over the course of his career, he wrote and directed more than three dozen films, including BOUDU SAVED FROM DROWNING, THE LOWER DEPTHS, GRAND ILLUSION, RULES OF THE GAME, and THE RIVER. Renoir was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director for THE SOUTHERNER and received an Honorary Academy Award in 1975.
- Dido Freire Renoir was a Brazilian script supervisor and wife of Jean Renoir. After serving as script supervisor on RULES OF THE GAME, she and Renoir moved to Hollywood, where they married in 1944. For the next 40 years she assisted Renoir with his films and memoirs and the two remained married until his death in 1979.
