- Summary
The collection contains cutting continuities created by Technicolor for some 3,750 features and short subjects. The documents offer detailed scene continuity and film footage counts in feet and frames and therefore serve as a valuable record of the exact continuity and length of a finished film as processed by Technicolor. The titles range from THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938), AROUND THE WORKD IN 80 DAYS (1956), FANTASIA (1942), GIGI (1958), GONE WITH THE WIND (1939), JOAN OF ARC (1948), THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1956), WEST SIDE STORY (1961), and THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939). Scores of animated films produced by Disney, Warner Bros., and Schlesinger, among others, are represented. The original volumes, compiled consecutively by year and arranged alphabetically within each year, were dismantled, the material placed in acid-free folders, and arranged alphabetically by film title.
- BiographyThe Technicolor Motion Picture Corporation was formed in 1915 and incorporated in 1922. Technicolor—nearly synonymous with color cinematography—is a color process developed by Herbert Kalmus and Daniel Comstock, engineers at Kalmus, Comstock & Westcott, Inc. What began as a two-color system in the mid- and late 1910s evolved into the three-color process first used in the early 1930s, showcased in such films as BECKY SHARP (1935) and GONE WITH THE WIND (1939). Hundreds of subsequent films were released with the credit "Color by Technicolor" during the company's heyday in the 1940s and 1950s. By the mid-1970s the company discontinued its three-strip processing. Long the industry standard for color printing, Technicolor maintains a laboratory in North Hollywood, California. Technicolor has received more than half a dozen scientific and technical awards from the Academy, and a Special Award (1939) was presented to the company for its success in bringing three-color feature production to the screen.
