- Summary
Acquired by the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library in March 2018, the Julius Paul poster collection consists of more than 90 posters printed in Austria, Hungary, Germany and Sweden. Julius Paul was an Austrian cigarette paper distributor who between the end of the first World War and his death in 1938, amassed a collection of posters documenting a diversity of subjects including moving pictures. Paul left his collection to a nephew who fled Austria when Germany invaded the country. Paul’s poster collection was left behind and subsequently sold by a Viennese book dealer to the Albertina Museum. In 2008, the Austrian Commission for Provenance Research determined that the collection had been sold under duress by Paul’s nephew and it was restituted to heirs who in turn sold the collection.
