The collection includes set design drawings, photographs, and other production material for the films CLEOPATRA, ISLAND IN THE SUN, and SOUTH PACIFIC. The bulk of the papers are from the production of CLEOPATRA which include: press releases, interoffice memos, budgets, telegrams, research magazines and materials, expense reports, receipts (from places in Los Angeles, London, Rome, Cairo, etc.), set continuity documents, meeting minutes, construction estimates, handwritten letters to DeCuir from colleagues, and maps, all outlining the escalating costs of this production that was quickly getting out out of control. Also included are a number of fabric swatches (and notes about them) that were used on set for various purpose.
- BiographyJohn DeCuir was an American art director and production designer for many important Hollywood films. Known for his lavish sets, he was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, and winning the Oscar for the films THE KING AND I (1956), CLEOPATRA (1963), and HELLO, DOLLY! (1969).
