The Theadora Van Runkle costume design drawings consists of 432 drawings. The collection consists almost entirely of original drawings for films, including THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS (1982), BONNIE AND CLYDE (1967), THE BUTCHER’S WIFE (1991), THE GODFATHER PART II (1974), JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN (1971), KISS OF DEATH (1995), MAME (1974), MYRA BRECKINRIDGE (1970), NEW YORK, NEW YORK (1977), PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED (1986), THE REIVERS (1969), S.O.B. (1981), STELLA (1990), THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (1968), and TROOP BEVERLY HILLS (1989). The collection also includes examples from Van Runkle’s nonfilm work, such as stage costumes for Liza Minnelli, a theatrical production of "A Streetcar Named Desire" (1973) with Faye Dunaway, and the television series "Wizards and Warriors" (1983). There are a handful of photographic prints of portraits of Theadora Van Runkle.
- BiographyTheadora Van Runkle was an American costume designer active in film from 1967 through the 1990s. She was born in Pittsburgh and moved to Los Angeles with her parents when she was an infant. She began her career working as an illustrator for the department store, I. Magnin. Van Runkle worked briefly as a sketch artist for costume designer, Dorothy Jeakins who recommended her as the costume designer for the film, BONNIE AND CLYDE (1967). The film went on to become a critical and popular success and Van Runkle’s costumes for Faye Dunaway caused a fashion sensation. Van Runkle received an Academy Award nomination for her work and she went on to have a successful career working on such films as THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (1968), MYRA BRECKINRIDGE (1970), THE GODFATHER PART II (1974), NEW YORK, NEW YORK (1977), and PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED (1986). Van Runkle also received Oscar nominations for her work on THE GODFATHER PART II and PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED.
