- Summary
The Robert and Frances Flaherty Study Center collection spans the years 1915-1982. The collection is comprised of photographs and audio recordings. The photograph series spans the years 1915-1948 and encompasses 39.7 linear feet. The series consists of photographic prints, photograph albums, negatives, nitrate negatives, glass negatives, and CD-ROMs. The majority of the collection consists of research, explorations, and publicity for Flaherty’s films, including NANOOK OF THE NORTH (1922), MOANA (1926), MAN OF ARAN (1934), ELEPHANT BOY (1937), THE LAND (1942), and LOUISIANA STORY (1948). There are also photographs of the Flaherty family, and photographs documenting Flaherty’s Canadian explorations prior to filming NANOOK OF THE NORTH. The audio recordings span the years 1930s-1982 and include both spoken word and music made by the Flahertys and other participants. There are more than 200 open-reel and cassette tapes containing interviews, seminars, conversations, lectures, music tracks and scores. There is one container of disc recordings. Flaherty’s documentary films represented in the audio recordings include NANOOK OF THE NORTH (1922), MAN OF ARAN (1934), ELEPHANT BOY (1937), LOUISIANA STORY (1948), among others.
- BiographyThe Claremont School of Theology established the Robert and Frances Flaherty Study Center in the 1960s to support research and teaching related to the art of the moving image with its focus on the pioneering contributions of documentarians Robert and Frances Flaherty.
- Frances Hubbard Flaherty wrote and received an Oscar nomination for LOUISIANA STORY (1948). She worked very closely with her husband Robert Joseph Flaherty on most of his productions in some capacity.
- Robert Joseph Flaherty and Frances Hubbard Flaherty were American documentary filmmakers. Their films include NANOOK OF THE NORTH (1922), TABU (1931), and LOUISIANA STORY (1948). Robert and Frances Flaherty received an Academy Award nomination in the writing category for the latter film.
