- BiographyJoseph Boggs Beale (1841-1926) was an American illustrator active in the late 19th and early 20th century. In addition to his work as a book and magazine illustrator, Beale created more than 2,000 illustrations specifically for reproduction on magic lantern slides. Magic lanterns were a Victorian-era pre-cinema device that projected images from hand-tinted slides onto a screen. In Philadelphia, Beale produced commercial work for the Frank Harris Lithography Company and for Caspar W. Briggs, a glass slide dealer.
