The Rob Harris papers span the years 1982-2011 and encompass 82 linear feet. The collection contains documentation, including photographs, related to Harris's activities as unit publicist on some 100 feature films. The unit publicist is responsible for all copy written about a film during its production. This includes biographies, cast lists, column items, credit lists, feature stories, production notes, production stories, and synopses. The production notes cover the genesis of the project, writing, casting, and logistics. The unit publicist is also directly responsible for the work of the still photographer, including everything from setting up a shot to providing photograph captions. - BiographyRob Harris is an American publicist active in film from the 1980s. After studying at UC Berkeley, and graduating with a degree in sociology from UCLA, Harris began his career as a freelance journalist. He proceeded to write for episodic television (“Laverne & Shirley,” 1976-1983), and eventually became the head publicity writer for 20th Century Fox. In 1983, Harris worked his first job in the production-side of filmmaking when GREMLINS (1984) director Joe Dante hired him as unit publicist for the film. He went on to have a career as a unit publicist, and in 1996 briefly served as the vice president of publicity for Gramercy Pictures. Since 1983, Harris has worked as a unit publicist for more than 100 films including THE GOONIES (1985), AIR AMERICA (1990), BLOOD DIAMOND (2006), REVOLUTIONARY ROAD (2008), and BLACK SWAN (2010). He is one of the few unit publicists to have been voted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Harris lives in London and Los Angeles, and is still actively working.
