The collection consists of production records for ALONG CAME A SPIDER (2001), STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY (1991), STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT (1996), STAR TREK: INSURRECTION (1998), STAR TREK: NEMESIS (2002) and TITANIC (1997). The files typically include scripts, budgets, production memos, production reports, schedules, and sometimes storyboards. The material was received in the form of production books assembled and maintained by Hornstein for use during filming. The material was removed from three-ring binders and foldered.
- BiographyMartin “Marty” Hornstein was born in the Bronx, New York in 1937. He studied at New York University where a motion picture workshop sparked an interest in documentary filmmaking. Not long after graduating in 1959, Hornstein was hired by Filmways, Inc. as a production assistant on the company’s commercials. He relocated to Los Angeles and over the next five years worked on hundreds of commercials shot all over the United States. He also began working in feature film production and served as a production assistant on THE MIRACLE WORKER (1962). He then worked in various production capacities at Universal Television, serving as assistant director on such series as RUN FOR YOUR LIFE, THE NAME OF THE GAME, and NIGHT GALLERY, among others, and as production manager on an episode of MARCUS WELBY, M.D. directed by Steven Spielberg.
Hornstein returned to film as second assistant director on THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER (1968), then served as both production manager and associate producer on SILENT RUNNING (1972). For the remainder of his career, Hornstein continued to work in both film and television as an assistant director, production manager, or producer. He often served as production manager on films he also produced, as with TRUCK TURNER (1974), for which he was also first assistant director I, THE JURY (1982), BAD BOYS (1983), and ALONG CAME A SPIDER (2001), among others. His other notable credits as a production manager include BLACK BELT JONES (1974), CORNBREAD, EARL AND ME (1975), FUTUREWORLD (1976), JACKNIFE (1989), and THE CROW: CITY OF ANGELS (1996). He served as a producer on THE NIGHT BEFORE (1988) and was an executive producer of PERMANENT RECORD (1988). Hornstein remained active in television as well, serving as production manager for such projects as ISN’T IT SHOCKING (1973), for which he was also first assistant director, SYBIL (1976), WALKING TALL (1981), and THE ATLANTA CHILD MURDERS (1985).
Hornstein is also well known for his work on the STAR TREK film series. He was co-producer and production manager on STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY (1991), and executive producer and production manager on STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT (1996), STAR TREK: INSURRECTION (1998), and STAR TREK NEMESIS (2002). Additionally, Hornstein taught a course in Production Concepts and Techniques at the American Film Institute from 1976 to 1983. In the late 1980s he was senior vice president in charge of production for Kings Road Entertainment. Hornstein died in 2013. - Subjects
