The Alexander Mackendrick journal is undated and is accompanied by material from 1993-1994. The handwritten journal describes Mackendrick's wartime experience in Italy as head of the film production unit of the Psychological Warfare Branch of the Allied Forces Headquarters. There are two annotated photocopies of the journal and photocopies of 71 photographs taken from the newsreels produced by Mackendrick's unit. Also, there are copies of non-contemporaneous notes by Mackendrick as well as a handwritten tribute to the director by Paul H. R. Elliott-Smith that describes working with Mackendrick during the war.
- BiographyAlexander (Sandy) Mackendrick was an American-born film director and screenwriter raised in Scotland. He was most active in film from the 1940s through 1960s. MacKendrick made films for the British Ministry of Information during World War II. He was nominated for an Academy Award in the writing category for THE MAN IN THE WHITE SUIT (1952). The screenplay was co-written with his cousin, Roger MacDougall, and John Dighton.
