The Costume Designers Guild Collection spans the years 1936-2005 (bulk 1942-1976). The collection documents the work of Hollywood costume designers including Michael Wolfe, Orry Kelly, Adele Palmer, Jean Louis, Moss Mabry, Bernard Johnson, May Routh, Patricia Norris, Albert Wolsky, April Ferry, Julie Weiss and Colleen Atwood. Many of the drawings include fabric swatches as well as notes related to the construction of the costume. The collection is notable for its emphasis on contemporary costume designers as well a large number of drawings for costumes designed for men. Titles include "Twelve Monkeys" (1995), "Bengal Brigade" (1954), "The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars and Motor Kings" (1976), "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (1969), "Coneheads" (1993), "The Elephant Man" (1980), "Elf" (2003), "Escape from New York" (1981), "I Love You, Alice B. Toklas" (1969), "The Manchurian Candidate" (1962), "Memoirs of a Geisha" (2005), "Pleasantville" (1998), "Shaft" (2000) and "Willie Dynamite" (1974). - BiographyThe Costume Designers Guild was formed in 1953 as an independent organization that negotiated separate contracts for its members who were either freelance designers or designers under contract to a studio. The Guild was formed exclusively for costume designers and in 1976, joined the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees as local 892.
