The Davis Grubb drawings are from circa 1954. There are 117 drawings by Grubb, primarily in pencil or pen and black ink on sketch paper, depicting scenes, characters, and settings from his novel "The Night of the Hunter." A 1973 typed letter from Grubb explains the circumstances under which the drawings were produced. - BiographyDavis Grubb (1919-1980) was born in Moundsville, West Virginia. His interest in fine arts, particularly writing and painting, led him to attend the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Grubb is best known as a short story writer and for his first novel, "The Night of the Hunter." Screenwriter James Agee's adaptation of the latter resulted in the 1955 film of the same name directed by Charles Laughton.
