- Summary
The collection consists of correspondence and diaries written during Clare Slaback’s service as a projectionist in the U.S. Army Air Force First Motion Picture Unit during World War II. The subseries Acquired by the library consists primarily of correspondence from Clare to Lucille, the majority written while he was stationed in North Africa and Italy, though there is some correspondence between the two written before their marriage in 1941. Much of the correspondence concerns Clare’s time projecting THE MEMPHIS BELLE (1943) for high-ranking officers and servicemen. The subseries Collected by Kelly Younger contains Slaback’s handwritten, candid diaries written during his service, as well as Lucille’s correspondence to Clare during this same period concerning life in Los Angeles during the war. Also included are transcripts of the diaries and letters, transcribed by researcher Kelly Younger.
- BiographyClare Slaback was born Andrew Clare Slaback in Hemet, California in 1913. At the time the United States entered World War II, Clare was employed as a projectionist at the Soboba Theatre in San Jacinto, California. He enlisted in the Army Air Force First Motion Picture Unit in 1942 as a projectionist and served in North Africa and Italy, projecting recent films for fellow servicemen. He was married to Lucille Slaback.
Lucille Slaback was born May Lucille Andress in Illinois around 1914. She was married to Clare Slaback. During World War II, Lucille worked as an elementary school teacher, first in San Jacinto and later in Hawthorne, California.
